On Saturday June 4 we held our annual Bingham Avenue Street Sale and Party. The day started off under a cloud of doubt – it had rained on the Friday night and was drizzling as street party planners headed out to set up the signs at the ends of the street.
Neighbours poking their heads out into the drizzle asked curiously – “Are we having the sale today?” As more brave souls started to set up their tables it seemed the answer was a resounding YES!
As the morning wore on the weather cleared and the temperatures started to climb. With the rescinding rain the buyers started to arrive. Sales were brisk up and down the street. Our advertising in the
Beach Metro News and in the Kingston Road Sale flyer paid off! The street sale was a success!
Around 3:45 the cars started to leave the main block between Woodale and Swanwick and your Street Party Committee gathered at Party HQ – (a.k.a 224 Bingham—Cyndy and Norm’s home) and pulled out the barricades (unlike previous years the City did not provide them, this year we had them custom built by Cyndy’s father) and set them up at the corners of Woodale and Bingham and at the north end at Swanwick and Bingham. The barricades were barely up when two Toronto Police Service Auxiliary officers arrived to provide assistance and to show the colours.
A couple of our younger residents learned first hand (without the consequences) what it was like to be handcuffed and placed in a cruiser!
Shortly afterwards JACK FM showed up with a DeLorean to promote their “Jack to the Future” contest. We had our first annual pet parade and it was great to see the kids all proudly parading their pet cats, dogs, and even rats. Some of the pets were dressed in fine costumes like Jack from 268 and Abby the Great Dane from 244.
Then it was on to the bike parade which is always a favourite with the kids. The bikes were as always decorated to the max! The fun continued for the kids with the screaming mommy and jujube diving games, the putt -putt golf and beanbag toss games, new this year proved to be a big hit. Thanks to Kim from 263 for providing these games.
When it was time to bring out the barbeques, Randy from 2XX one of the original party founders 9 years ago was astounded we had SIX barbeques. Thank you to all who not only provided their barbeques but stayed and cooked the fantastic spreads which were brought out.
Speaking of spreads – thanks also to all of the neighbours who provided salads, casseroles and desserts for the pot luck table.
After dinner we were treated to the sounds of up and coming “Directors Cut” featuring Eric from 2XX who played a number of songs for us.
We began winding down the evening with the “House Number Draw”.
Thanks go out again to all of the neighbours who contributed prizes to this years draw. They were fantastic prizes and all who won them are thrilled!
